Apple is preparing to introduce end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging between iPhones and Android devices with the rollout of iOS 26.5. The update marks a major improvement for cross-platform texting, bringing stronger privacy and a more modern messaging experience to conversations between iPhone and Android users.

The feature is currently available in beta and is expected to roll out publicly with the next iOS update.

What Is RCS Messaging?

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a newer messaging standard designed to replace outdated SMS and MMS texting.

Compared to traditional texting, RCS offers:

  • Typing indicators
  • Read receipts
  • High-quality photo and video sharing
  • Better group chats
  • Wi-Fi messaging support
  • Improved security features

Until now, secure encrypted messaging between iPhone and Android users has been limited because Apple relied heavily on SMS for cross-platform communication.

End-to-End Encryption Comes to iPhone and Android Chats

With iOS 26.5, Apple is adding support for encrypted RCS conversations using:

  • The GSMA’s RCS Universal Profile
  • The Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol

MLS is an industry-standard encryption system designed specifically for secure messaging and group chats.

This means messages exchanged between compatible iPhones and Android devices can now be protected with end-to-end encryption, preventing outside parties from reading the contents of conversations.

How Encryption Will Work

For encrypted RCS messaging to function properly:

  • Both users must have RCS enabled
  • Both devices must use compatible messaging apps
  • Supported carriers are required
  • Neither device can fall back to SMS or MMS

If the conversation switches to traditional SMS or MMS at any point, end-to-end encryption will no longer apply.

How to Tell If an RCS Chat Is Encrypted

Apple is making it easier for users to identify secure conversations.

When encryption is active, iOS will display:

  • A lock icon
  • An “Encrypted” label inside the chat

Even though conversations between iPhone and Android devices will still appear as green bubbles on iOS, the underlying technology will now be far more secure than old SMS texting.

Android Already Supports Encrypted RCS

Google has already implemented encrypted RCS messaging for Android-to-Android chats through Google Messages.

Google Messages is also expected to become the primary messaging app on many Samsung devices as Samsung continues phasing out its own messaging platform.

Apple joining encrypted RCS support is a significant step toward improving communication between the two major mobile ecosystems.

Why This Matters

For years, messaging between iPhones and Android devices has lagged behind modern messaging apps like:

  • WhatsApp
  • Signal
  • Telegram

SMS lacked encryption, media quality was poor, and group chats often felt outdated.

Encrypted RCS helps solve many of those issues by bringing:

  • Better privacy
  • Improved media sharing
  • Modern chat features
  • More reliable group messaging
  • Enhanced user experience

A Major Shift for Mobile Messaging

Apple’s support for encrypted RCS represents one of the biggest upgrades to cross-platform texting in years.

While green bubbles are not disappearing anytime soon, iPhone and Android users will finally gain a more secure and modern messaging experience without relying entirely on third-party apps.

As RCS adoption grows globally, encrypted messaging between different mobile platforms could eventually become the standard rather than the exception.
